Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and play a crucial role in almost all biological processes. Our body is roughly 16% protein woven into our bones, muscles, arteries, skin, hair, fingernails, and all organs including our brains. Proteins help with oxygenation, digestion by forming enzymes and even convert to sugars when there is not enough fats and carbohydrates. When coupled with sterols they are found as regulatory chemicals called hormones and proteins also carry fat and cholesterol to all body parts. They form the DNA, RNA and chromosomes that pass “us” on for generations. Although we don’t require a lot of protein, we do need the “building blocks” of 10 essential amino acids which are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, valine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, and tryptophan with arginine considered “essential” only for the young.
