An allergy is the body's immune response to normally harmless substances. Usually these substances “allergens” cause no problems unless they are identified as a “threatening foreign protein” causing an inappropriate immune response. IgE mediated allergies produces “exaggerated” allergen specific IgE antibodies that bind to cell surface mast cells and develop memory (sensitization), but without symptoms until the next exposure. Since mast cells are found in eyes, nose, mouth, throat, stomach and gut, the second exposure causes a release of histamine, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins producing the dreaded “histamine response”. Symptoms can range from mild itchy nose and red runny eyes to moderate wheezing and asthma-like symptoms even nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, hives or severe throat swelling or severe life-threatening anaphylactic shock. The immune system may also get involved by responding without producing IgE antibodies, however, non-IgE mediated allergies are poorly understood and involve multiple cell lines over-reacting to foreign protein allergens. Pollen, molds, dust mites, pet dander, cockroaches, environmental chemicals, cleaning products, triclosan and bisphenol-A (BPA), personal care products, foods and even “thunderstorm asthma” is allergy-linked. Ragweed allergies may cause reactions to melons, bananas, tomatoes, zucchini, sunflower seeds, dandelions, chamomile and echinacea. Grass allergies may cause reactions to peaches, tomatoes. Antioxidants, phenols, omega 3 fatty acids, probiotics, vitamin D, local honey, quercetin-rich foods like apples, berries, red onions and red grapes inhibit histamine release. Stinging Nettle, Goldenseal and other herbs can help minimize reactions. Allergy-driven asthma affects 10 million Americans!
Multiple organ systems need to be addressed when dealing with this particular "immune disorder".
The first step is to reduce and preferably eliminate all meat, fish, dairy to minimize the insult of "foreign protein" reactions while you are in the healing phase.
